THORPE FAMILY AT BREAKFAST, 1934

Jim Thorpe married Freeda Kirkpatrick of Galion, Ohio, on October 23, 1925, two years after his divorce from Iva. Freeda, seventeen years younger than Jim, had met him when she was working at Walter Lingo's Oorang kennels. They had four sons, Carl Phillip, William, Richard and John. The three oldest, (from left to right) Richard, William and Carl Phillip, are seen here at their home in Hawthorne, California. Thorpe spent a lot of time on the road, playing for various baseball and football teams, during the early years of their marriage. After retiring from sports in 1929, he went on the lecture circuit, lobbied for Indian rights, and even managed a traveling all-Indian basketball team. As a result, just as in his first marriage, scenes like this one at the breakfast table were rare. His frequent absences and his drinking finally became too much for Freeda, and they were divorced in 1941 after sixteen years of marriage.
